Emerging markets
India and Vietnam are countries all eyes are focused on nowadays. Probably
good to know something about the business etiquette there. Better safe than
sorry. Here are a few highlights:
Indian eaten, Indian gone
- Traditional greeting is done by placing the palms together and the thumbs
pointing up under the chin. A slight lowering of the head and uttering Namaste.
- Embraces, pats, kisses are not done. Gestures of affection are not allowed
in public.
- Indians often sway their head from left to right in a meeting This means
noting more than that they understand what has been said.
- Prefer talking about climate, art, life in other countries and cinema and
avoid poverty, religion and relations with Pakistan.
- There is no after dinner session for talking business. All is said during dinner.
- Left hand is dirty, use only your right hand while eating with the hands.
Xin Chao in Vietnam
- It is common to shake hands and bow lightly your head when meeting.
- “Xin Chao” ( pronounced Sin Chou) means “Hello” and is used for greeting.
You should pronounce it with the right intonation in order to avoid
misunderstandings. Besides” Hello” it has five other meanings.
- You should be punctual. Vietnamese are famous to be punctual and have a
tendency to arrive ten or fifteen minutes early for appointments.
- You should avoid discussions about politics. However they like to talk about
their country, culture, exotic scenery and gastronomy at which they are
very proud.
- Dress formal. Too short shirts and dresses are inappropriate. For meetings
is recommended to wear a suit and tie.
