Dutch CIO has more responsibility than foreign colleague’s

Dutch CIO is more often prevalent in management than CIOs in other countries.

The Dutch CIO works at a very high level compared to CIOs in other countries. 51% of the CIO for instance, is responsible for innovation and technology. This is shown by the yearly IT Leadership Strategic Survey of Harvey Nash among more than 1.300 respondents of the USA and Europe.

From the results appears that IT Managers from the Netherlands often have the ambition to play a strategic role within an organisation and often fulfil this position as well. This is shown from the fact that 59% of the Dutch CIO is member of the board compared to 46% on European level. The survey shows furthermore that knowledge of IT in the current economic situation is indispensable for the success of an organisation.

Foreign professional
61% of the respondents tell that they have suffered from the lack of skill of IT-professionals during the economical recession. Still 51% of the Dutch respondents believes that a professional should come from across their own borders. This view contradicts that of the CIOs in the rest of Europe. Although the percentage is significantly lower than last year, the majority of the CIOs in the rest of Europe is quite positive about this.

Flexibility
Jan Leen ’t Jong, director the Harvey Nash Netherlands explains the Dutch results. ‘The outcome of the survey of this year confirms our experiences. It seems a contradiction with what happens on the labour market but we still conclude that there is a shortage in specialists. The flexibility of the labour market is still going on. Especially on the current market we see that there is extra attention to engaging  outside in stead of hiring permanent employees.’
