The Indian job market

Perseverance and positive thinking is always important to succeed abroad, but the love for the country is typical when people talk about India.

They recognize the significant differences between income as an unfortunate part of the Indian society. But without prejudice to this, they quickly talk about the colours and scents that characterize the country. India is as the love for life. You've been warned: further readings means a risk!

Will BRIC become broke?
India is one of the four BRIC-countries. This abbreviation stands for Brazil, Russia, India and China. These countries are the four large growing countries of the world economy with a fast rising GPD and rising export figures. But will these kinds of economies stand during the global credit crisis?

In India, the international slowdown had a major impact on the local economy and the unbridled growth is restricted. But India is the America of the 21st century; the country of the unprecedented opportunities for immigrants. So, does the crisis seem as the moment to rediscover yourself and your product, just go for it.

Bharat Mata and the new pragmatism
There is a World of difference between the traditional norms and values of India and the proffesional manners of the West. Their idea of teamwork is much closer than with us and claiming the success on your own is very unusual.
Next to this, saying 'no' is not done and certainly contradicting a superior is not possible. Make it very easy for yourself and the Indian people working for you by being very clear about what needs to be done and when and by whom and with what demand of qualification. Because there is a big difference between  making things ‘done’ and making things ‘done’.

Business etiquette
India is composed of many different groups of people and they all contribute to the versatility of the country and business mores that prevail in India. Traditional manners with a strong hierarchical storage are still the most common form of business practices. Despite the existence of a strong team spirit, not every team member has an equally important position.

Decisions are made topdown. Despite the natural modesty of the people, foreigners are sometimes surprised by the immediacy they encounter. In a first meeting someone can simply immediately inform what you will do, what you offer and why it is interesting for your Indian business partner.

Bare arms
Doing business in India is a formal affair, but the dress code is not as formal as in many Western countries. Women often wear a salwar kameez to their work, the sari is for formal occasions or reserved for women in a high position. If you are not yet accustomed to the Indian clothing, keep it simple and wear - especially for an interview - a long suit or a long skirt. Keep in mind that bare arms is experienced as very sexy.

Building a personal relationship is very important in India. And actually you only find a job through networking. That sounds difficult, but here are some tips proven successful:
1. Doing internships at Indian companies
2. Put your resume at sites like Monster and Naukri.
3. Go to walk-in-interviews that are organised by some mulinationals.
4. Recruitment Agencies/Consultants are the most easy and effective way to a job in India.
 
Visa
Most nationalities need a visa to travel to India and especially to work there.  Like most governments, the Indian government uses the concept of reciprocity. So depending on how difficult it is for Indian people to work in your country as easy or difficult it is for you to work in India. Keep even with a simply travel to India a wide time margin for the visa application.

Embassy
Register at the consulate of your country can help, as well as ensure that the embassy know that you're here. Not only in case problems arise, but also from the perspective of networks. In fact, many things in India happen through networking. So do your benefit from this.
